Gwent Police is now treating the death of 48-year-old Richard Glyn Carslake, who was found dead in a flat on Jeddo Street, Pill on Wednesday, 06 April as murder.
Results from an earlier post mortem indicate that Mr Carslake died as a result of pressure to the neck and the face.
A 20 year old man from the Pontypool area has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody for questioning at this time.
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Roberts said:
“We are trying to trace his final movements and would like to speak to anyone who may have seen him on and since March 29th”.
“Our sympathies remain with Richard’s family.”
Newport Local Policing Unit Superintendent Dave Johnson added:
“We have members of the local Neighbourhood team in and around the area who are more than happy to speak to anyone who has any information or concerns about this incident.”
