An unique exhibition of artwork created as part of an innovative project into the effect of art on the lives of people with dementia is being held at Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor from 2 to 12 June.
The work on display is the result of a research project by engage Cymru in cooperation with Gwynedd Council, where some residents from Plas Maesincla in Caernarfon took part in a remarkable art project.
Gwawr Wyn Roberts, Gwynedd Council Community Arts development Officer said:
“Being creative and having the opportunity to enjoy art is accepted as a way of improving wellbeing and helping people who are sick or who receive treatment.
“As part of this exciting initiative, residents from Plas Maesincla had the chance to visit an exhibition of Cefyn Burgess artwork at the Gwynedd Museum and Gallery which was a catalyst for them to start creating their own work. They worked with community artist, Eleri Jones to produce their own art work – paintings, cushions, pottery and more.
“It’s fantastic to see the artwork created as part of the project will now be on show at the Gwynedd Museum and Gallery.”
The Plas Maesincla project is part of a Wales-wide action research project exploring the role of galleries and artists in addressing social isolation among older people. The projects aim to tackle social isolation, increase health and well-being and add to older peoples’ quality of life.
A report on the research will be launched on 11 June by Alun Ffred Jones AM at Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor.
The exhibition is open to the public: Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Bangor is open Tuesday – Friday 12:30 – 4:30, Saturday 10:30 – 4:30. Admission is Free
