Asghar registers statement of opinion in support of Pakistan flood victims

National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar has registered a ‘Statement of Opinion’ urging fellow Members to show support and solidarity for victims of the floods in Pakistan and to welcome all fundraising efforts in Wales and across the UK.

Flooding began in Pakistan in July following heavy monsoon rains – with recent estimates suggesting approximately 2,000 people have been killed and over one million homes destroyed as a consequence.

Mr Asghar, who represents South Wales East, said: “Now the summer recess has come to an end, I am pleased to be able to put forward this Statement of Opinion to show support and welcome efforts to help those affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan.

“I have been delighted with some of the fundraising efforts across Wales and the UK; not least in my own region – where I have witnessed, first hand, the generosity from many of South Wales East’s mosques and support groups – as well as from many, many others. People from all communities have been eager to help”.

On Saturday (September 18th), Mr Asghar attended the Arian International Convention in Manchester where funds were raised for victims of the disaster.

He added: “It gave me great pleasure to attend the event in Manchester. I believe there were guests from 17 UK cities, including Newport and Cardiff, with many attending the function from overseas.

“There was a tremendous show of unity for this great cause and a significant sum of money was raised in support of victims of the floods in Pakistan”.
