Assembly approves Trowbridge amalgamation

The Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills has approved Cardiff Council’s proposal to amalgamate Trowbridge Infant and Junior Schools. Jane Hutt has given the plan, to combine the schools on the junior site, the go-ahead.

The proposal also included the transferral of a Welsh-medium school, established in part of the premises at Oakfield Primary, into the existing premises of Trowbridge Infant School.

The council’s Executive has confirmed it will now implement these proposals, which will come into effect in September 2010.

The scheme has also been designed so a nursery unit can be established at the new Welsh-medium school in the future. This will require the Council to consult further and publish another statutory notice.

Cardiff Council’s Executive recommended the amalgamation in July 2008. One written objection was received to the subsequent statutory notice and the matter was passed to the Assembly Government in March of this year.

Executive Member for Schools and Lifelong Learning Councillor Freda Salway said: “These changes are another big part of our reorganisation of schools. I am delighted the Assembly has approved this amalgamation as I really believe it will give this part of the city greater choice for their children’s education.”
