Assembly Rivals Team Up to Campaign for Wales

Two Rhondda politicians more used to crossing swords in the Senedd, joined forces today to promote the ‘Yes’ campaign for enhanced powers for the Welsh Assembly.

Leanne Wood, Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for South Wales Central, and Labour’s Rhondda AM, Leighton Andrews, campaigned together on the streets of Tonypandy today.  The pair talked to shoppers about the merits of voting for a stronger voice for Wales in the referendum on Assembly powers on March 3rd.

Under the current system, Welsh legislation needs to gain approval from both Houses of Parliament before coming into force.  If people vote ‘Yes’ vote in March, this unnecessary layer of bureaucracy will be stripped away, saving time and money in the process.

Ms Wood said: “Over the years Leighton and I have not always seen eye-to-eye on a range of political issues so I wouldn’t be surprised if our presence on the streets together in Tonypandy surprised a few people.

“Although we have our differences, when it comes to securing a stronger voice for Wales, we are in full agreement.  We had a positive response from the shoppers and I hope the message is getting across to people that this is a positive step.”

Mr Andrews added: “The cross-party Yes for Wales campaign is now up and running and taking the message to the people of the Rhondda. We had a great reception in Tonypandy today despite the weather.”
