ATM scam

Last week a card scanning and pin number reader device were recovered from the ATM cash machine at the Tesco store in Porthmadog.

One device was fitted over the card slot and receipt slot on the ATM machine and the pin number reader device was fitted over the pin number pad above the ATM screen. Both devices were exactly the same colour as the ATM machine.

It is unknown how long this device had been attached to the ATM, however it is believed that it was fitted some time after the store closed at 10pm on the 29 January 2010 due to the ATM not working properly from when the store opened at 8amon the 30 January 2010.

PC Rhiannon Wright explained: “The ATM machine is checked by staff on a regular basis however as these devices were so well concealed and actually looked like they were part of the ATM machine staff might not have noticed them.”

She added: “Criminals usually use these sorts of devices to clone cards, therefore if anyone has used their cards during this period of time or are concerned; the best thing to do would be to cancel and re order a new card with their bank.”

If anyone has any information regarding suspicious vehicles or anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time they should contact PC Wright on 101 if in Wales, 0845 6071001 (Welsh line), 0845 6071002 (English line), Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
