Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards – Star Volunteers 2014 winners

Hardworking volunteers across Caerphilly county borough have been honoured in a special award ceremony.

Caerphilly County Borough Council and Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO) held the annual Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards – Star Volunteers 2014 on Wednesday 2nd July to celebrate and reward the work of local volunteers.

The award ceremony, held at the council’s Penallta House headquarters, also provided the opportunity for Cllr David Carter, Mayor of Caerphilly county borough, to present the Mayor’s Civic Awards.

Award winners on the evening were:

Star Volunteers 2014

  • New Volunteer – Tracey Hollifield
  • Environmental Volunteer – David Doyle
  • Record Breaking Volunteer – Wendy Greenough
  • Practical Service Adult Group Volunteers – Aber Valley Heritage Group
  • Practical Service Adult Volunteer – Daryl Harries
  • GwirVol Volunteer Commitment Award – 1st Fleur de Lys Rainbows, Girl Guides
  • Millennium Volunteers – Nerys Harries
  • Young Volunteer Award – Emma James
  • Parent Volunteer – Stephen Pegler
  • Retired Senior Volunteer – Sandra Hardacre
  • Inspirational Volunteer – Rhys Nute
  • Supreme Volunteer – David Humphreys

Mayor’s Civic Awards

  • Doreen Brown
  • Robert & Patricia Griffiths
  • Robert Withers

David Humphreys, from Trecenydd, was crowned Supreme Volunteer. David has dedicated 47 years of his life to volunteering with the Scouting movement, joining the movement when he was just 9-years-old.

Mayor Cllr Carter said of the Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards: “Volunteers in Caerphilly county borough make an invaluable contribution to the communities they serve – they make things happen and often change people’s lives – and hearing their stories has made for a very inspiring evening. The Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards are about acknowledging these community champions and saying ‘thank you’ for the vital work they do. I am extremely proud that the council is able to support this important event.”

The Caerphilly Voluntary Sector Achievement Awards – Star Volunteers 2014 was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council and GAVO, and sponsored by The Campaign Newspaper, Gwent Police, Groundwork, The Parent Network and GwirVol.
