Award-winning singer helps raise funds for festival

Jackie Oates will be entertaining folk enthusiasts on behalf of Caerleon Arts Festival on Sunday, March 7.

Caerleon Arts Festival is one of the regular events that will be part of the celebrations for Newport Festival 2010.

Running from 2 July to 11 July, the Caerleon festival will feature internationally renowned sculptors creating works of art, children’s art, Shakespeare in the Roman amphitheatre, music, singing, dancing as well as art and craft exhibitions.

Jackie Oates has won a string of awards despite being a relative newcomer to the British folk scene.

Jackie is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire whose unique treatment of English ballads and songs and pure, haunting singing style has attracted increasing attention.

She was chosen to perform at a special English folk showcase at the South-By-South-West music conference in Austin Texas in March and will be performing in New York with the showcase line-up three days earlier.

Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively at festivals and folk clubs across the country, in a solo capacity and with a number of bands.

This year she was nominated for three BBC folk awards: singer of the year, album of the year and best traditional track.

Jackie will be playing at Llanhennock Village Hall with the support of the Arts Council for Wales.

Tickets cost £8 from Caerleon Tourist Information Centre 01633 422656 or Rafi Goldsmith, Ffwrwm, 01633 430271. It is a 7.30pm for 8.15pm start and there will be a bar.
