Awards recognise achievements of looked after children in the Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s annual awards evening to celebrate the achievements of looked after children was held at Barry Memorial Hall.

Children and young people received awards at the event, which was organised by the Children First Team, for a range of achievements including academic success, improved behaviour and sporting and artistic achievements.

Cllr Dorothy Turner, cabinet member for social and care services and Chair of the Corporate Parenting Panel, was delighted to welcome Mrs Gwenda Thomas AM, Deputy Minister for Social Care, who addressed the audience and presented many of the awards.

The children and young people were supported at the event by their foster carers, their families, social workers and teachers and enjoyed entertainment from pupils of Barry Comprehensive, St Richard Gwyn Comprehensive and Cardinal Newman Comprehensive schools, including musical performances and street dancing.

Cllr Turner said: “This annual event is a wonderful opportunity for the Vale of Glamorgan Council to congratulate looked after children on their achievements. I was delighted that Mrs Gwenda Thomas was able to join us for the event and I know she was very impressed by the children and young people whom she met. I am proud of all their achievements and committed to ensuring the Council continues to support all looked after children to achieve success.”
