Babies and books on the beach to celebrate National Bookstart Day 2010

Denbighshire Library Service’s Bookstart team is holding a special rhymetime event in Rhyl this Thursday (10 June) as part of National Bookstart Day 2010 celebrations and families from across Denbighshire will be coming along to enjoy rhymes songs and stories at the seaside.

The Chairman of Denbighshire County Council and the Mayor of Rhyl will be joining the party as well as one or two surprise guests at the event being held at the Events Arena at 1.30pm.

Bethan M Hughes of Denbighshire Library Service said: “The Bookstart message is simple – babies love books and libraries love babies.

“Rhymetimes in libraries bring lots of families into their local library and we offer them a warm welcome and plenty of things to do. This special Seaside Rhymetime will be a chance to celebrate National Bookstart Day on the beach in Rhyl and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the council’s leisure services to arrange the event.”

More than 4,000 seaside themed events, storytelling, singing and rhyming sessions will be taking place across the UK this week for National Bookstart Day. Bookstart aims to help every child in the UK to develop a lifelong love of books and this year, the programme will offer millions of children and parents the chance to discover the joy of reading together.

A free specially commissioned At the Seaside booklet written by Tony Mitton and illustrated by Alex Ayliffe will be handed out at events.
