S4C’s ground-breaking nursery series Y Diwrnod Mawr has been nominated for a BAFTA UK Children’s award at this year’s ceremony.
Y Diwrnod Mawr – which broke new ground in children’s television with the first ever documentary series for pre-school children – will go head to head with productions Grandpa in my Pocket, Big and Small and Something Special, all three broadcast on CBeebies. The four will compete in the Pre-School Live Action category.
The series, produced by Ceidiog Cyf, has been recognised in the UK and beyond in the past. Earlier this year, Y Diwrnod Mawr was nominated for a Rose d’Or award.
The first series of Y Diwrnod Mawr on S4C was broadcast in the spring and the second is currently on screen during Cyw’s hours.
Cyw will also be competing against some the biggest names in UK television at the BAFTA UK Children’s Awards for the second successive year. This time it will compete against CBBC, CBeebies and Channel 5’s children’s output, Milkshake! in the Channel of the Year competition.
The good news comes only weeks after the on-screen debut of Clwb Cyw – the new weekend provision for pre-school and nursery children between 07:00 and 09:00. This is the first time that Cyw has been broadcast on Saturdays and Sundays. Cyw is also broadcast every weekday from 07:00 until 13:30.
Siân Eirian, S4C’s Head of Children’s Services, says: “Y Diwrnod Mawr is a pioneering Welsh series which offers young children a taste of factual and documentary programmes – programmes that offer memorable and sometimes evocative experiences. This nomination proves that S4C’s significant investment in children’s programming has been a great success and it has made a substantial contribution to the Welsh language and cultural life in Wales.”
The BAFTA UK Children’s Awards are on 28 November.
