Bag Snatch Warning in Aberdare

Officers in Aberdare are linking two bag snatches which have occurred in the area in the space of one week.

Both times, elderly women have been targeted, and the offender has made off with their handbags containing cash.

The public – especially the elderly or vulnerable – are being warned to be on their guard, and the general public are urged to come forward with any information they may have.

The first incident occurred on Thursday, April 28th, just after midday.

A hooded male approached an 82 year-old woman as she walked alongside the collesium in Aberdare. He snatched and made off with her bag.

The second incident occurred two days later on April 30th, again just after midday. This time, a male – once again hooded at the time of the incident – approached the 81 year-old victim from behind as she took the steps alongside Moria chapel between Mountain Ash road and Plantation Road. Once again the offender snatched and made off with the victim’s bag.

In both instances cash was stolen from the bags which were discarded close by and found by a member of the public. The victim’s were left shocked by their ordeal, but recieved no physical injuries.

The male is described as being white, with a scruffy, unshaven appearance and has a thin build. He has a thin nose and a gaunt face, and is said to be aged between 40 and 50. At the time of both incidents he was wearing a navy and maroon stripey hooded top.

Sergeant Damien Mckeon, said: “These types of incidents are extremely rare, but a spate of very similar offences have taken place in the area in a short space of time, leading us to believe the same person is responsible. Elderly, vulnerable people have been targeted and we are very keen to make an arrest to prevent any further incidents. We are providing our continued support to the elderly victims in both cases.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Aberdare Police Station via 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
