Work to revitalise Bangor High Street from the Cathedral to Dean Street, carried out by Gwynedd Council and its partners, will start next month.
This first phase of the £3.5 million project will include resurfacing work and improvements to the seating area outside the Cathedral.
The work is funded through the EU Convergence Programme and Welsh Assembly’s Government’s Môn a Menai programme and is delivered in partnership with local authorities. It forms part of a total regeneration investment across North Wales of £38million, with £19m coming from the European Regional Development Fund.
A public exhibition of plans for Bangor Public Realm was held last year based on feedback from workshops held with various groups, including retailers, access groups and schools.
This three year regeneration project will focus on Bangor High Street and other areas of the city. Detailed designs will be produced later in the year.
This first phase will include work on the narrow junction of Glanrafon Road and the High Street. This will mean the closure of the road from Friday afternoon, 5 March until Monday morning, 8 March, to allow the work to be completed quickly.
Pat Jones, Project Coordinator said: “We are confident that this investment in Bangor will make the city an attractive, vibrant and enjoyable place to live, work and visit.
“We appreciate that there may be disruption to residents, traders and shoppers while the work is going on and we are grateful for everyone’s patience.”
Gwynedd Council and the building contractors have contacted local businesses and residents to inform them of when the work is being carried out and of alternative traffic management proposals. Notices of these arrangements will also be posted around the area.
