Not just another Manic Monday

Hosted by the inestimable Mab Jones, Manic Monday takes place on the first Monday of every month in the upstairs room of The Promised Land, a fine venue. Manic Monday has now been running for a year, beginning at Chapter, before a move to O’Neill’s and finally arriving at The Promised Land last summer.

It is distinctly a Spoken Word event as opposed to a Poetry Night, encompassing standup comedy and prose alongside the poets.

Usually 4 main acts, and space in the middle for half a dozen open mic spots, Manic Monday is manic indeed, with a fast moving pace throughout, quick breaks, much food for thought. The acts are handpicked by Mab, people she’s seen perform at other events, and are very eclectic – if you have a voice and you’re using it well, you’re on. The respectful and attentive audience reflects this – young and old alike mingle happily in this environment.

The open mic section proves to be very popular and is usually over-subscribed. It is purely a first-come-first-served basis, and is a great forum for new and old writers and performers to try out new material.

If you’re wondering what all this fuss is about Spoken Word, come along and find out. You’ll be shocked, surprised, amused, annoyed, tickled, tantalised, seduced and sated. You may not like everything you see, but you can also say that about TV.
