Barmouth RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat, The Moira Barrie, was called out on Saturday 12 June to assist a yachtsman who was injured while practising for the Three Peaks Yacht Race.
The 37-foot yacht, The Prairie Oyster, was four miles out in Cardigan Bay, with three sailors onboard, practising for the race when information was received that a crew member had sustained a blow to the head and needed medical assistance.
The lifeboat was launched immediately and on arrival at the scene the casualty was given first aid by one of the lifeboat crew who is also a paramedic. The injured sailor was then carefully transferred to the lifeboat, which then returned to Barmouth Harbour where he was taken to a waiting ambulance.
Jon Wheate, the second coxswain, said: “Pete Davies, the coxswain, did a good job bringing the lifeboat alongside the yacht because conditions out there were challenging.”
