Barry choir still in good voice for charities

Vale of Glamorgan Mayor Cllr Emlyn Williams and the Mayoress, his wife, Joan, hosted a special thank you reception for the Barry Male Voice Choir.

This support included an appearance, along with the Barry Island Junior School Choir, at a charity concert, hosted by Cllr Williams, at Art Central, Barry.

During the reception at Barry Town Hall, Cllr Williams, accompanied by the Mayoress, his wife, Joan, paid tribute to the choir’s proud 108-year history and their good work as a charity within their community.

Cllr Williams noted that, from humble beginnings as a party of 12 men, the choir grew in number, peaking at 108 singers in 1913. Following considerable success in competitions the choir’s emphasis has changed in recent years to holding fund-raising concerts. The choir has also enjoyed touring overseas visits and has built up special links with the Vale’s twin town of Rheinfelden in Germany.

Their forthcoming concerts include an appearance at The Glanfa, Wales Millennium Centre, on April 22, and at a Gala of Massed Male Choirs at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on 8 May.

The choir is always on the lookout for new members and current rehearsals are held in the Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Street, on Monday and Thursday (7.30-9.30pm). Further information from secretary John Rees Davies on 01446 746387.
