Basic skills boost for county schools

Several schools in Pembrokeshire were presented with their Basic Skills Quality Standard award on Wednesday by the Head of Basic Skills Cymru, Toni Schiavone.

Mr Schiavone’s first visit was to Wolfscastle CP School, where they had a special assembly. He then visited St Mark’s Church in Wales VA School in Merlins Bridge, Haverfordwest, and enjoyed a tour of the classes.

Mr Schiavone continued to Stackpole Church in Wales VC School, where he talked to the pupils about how well they had progressed.

His next visit was to Milford Haven School, where he met staff and a range of children who have made good progress in English and Maths. He also met representatives of the Language and Play and Number and Play projects in Milford Haven Library.

The final visit of the day was to Ysgol y Preseli where Mr Schiavone formally presented the award to the Headteacher, Mike Davies and the Deputy Headteacher, Nerys Nicholas.

Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and the Welsh Language, welcomed the visit.

He said: “I’m really pleased to see the increasing impact of strategic interventions in schools in Pembrokeshire in the raising of standards in literacy and numeracy.

“It was a useful opportunity to show the Head of Basic Skills how this was happening in a wide range of schools and other places of learning across the county.

“It was particularly good to hear from the pupils, themselves, how they appreciate the support they have received and the positive effect this has had on them personally.”
