BBC National Orchestra of Wales will perform Mozart’s famous Requiem at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, on Friday 11 June, followed by an evening including two great Russian Classics at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea on 19 June to complete their Cardiff and Swansea 2009/10 seasons .
Mysteriously commissioned by a stranger during the last months of his life, the ill Mozart was convinced that he was writing his own Requiem when he wrote one of his most famous works. Incomplete at the time of his death, it is one of his most otherworldly creations. At this Cardiff concert this masterpiece will be heard alongside another composer’s final work – the powerful first movement of Mahler’s incomplete Tenth Symphony.
Joining the Orchestra and powerful sound of BBC National Chorus of Wales for the performance will be the Orchestra’s Swiss Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer and a superb line up of vocalists: Soprano Miah Persson, Mezzo Soprano Pamela Helen Stephen, Tenor James Gilchrist and Bass Peter Rose.
The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s Live at 7 programme.
On June 19 at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, Matthias Bammert will conduct the Orchestra for an evening of Russians classics including Rachmaninov’s Fourth Piano Concerto written whilst the composer was in exile in America. An exceptional pianist with a special affinity for the work of Russian romantic composers, Nikolai Demidenko, will perform the lyrical Concerto.
Prokofiev’s Suite, Romeo and Juliet, penned by the composer on the eve of returning to his native Russia, unlocks the full bittersweet drama of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in his music for ballet. Rossini’s Overture, The Thieving Magpie will complete the programme.
This concert is being recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
