Bike Club to launch in Wales

Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing Jane Davidson AM will be officially launching Bike Club in Wales at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 9 June.

Bike Club is a project that engages with young people aged 10-20 by inspiring them to become participants and leaders of creative, fun and inclusive activities. A series of Bike Clubs will begin in Cardiff and surrounding areas that will help children and young people to learn new life skills through cycling.

Bike Club Development Officer for Cardiff Melanie Davies said: “Bike Club is an exciting opportunity for children and young people to engage in fun, interesting and unique cycling activities. I’m looking forward to working with groups of young people and helping them to apply for funding.”

Bike Club works closely with organisations such as youth clubs, youth groups and community focused schools. Clubs use cycling-related activities as a way to improve physical activity levels, health, learning and social inclusion for people across Wales – especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, as outlined in the One Wales Agenda.

Bike Club has been formed by a consortium of three well-established national charities. Youth Cymru brings together youth groups in Wales, ContinYou Cymru is an organisation that promotes non-formal learning and CTC is the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation.

The development of Bike Club, initially funded by the Department for Transport, has been brought to Wales with funding from Asda’s Pedal Power fundraising campaign.
