BBC National Orchestra of Wales to perform two Great British Classics

BBC National Orchestra of Wales will perform two great British classics, Walton’s Cello Concerto and Holst’s The Planets at St David’s Hall, Cardiff at 7pm this Friday 15 January.

Alban Gerhardt will perform Walton’s passionate Cello Concerto. Alban is one of Germany’s outstanding cellists with a refreshingly relaxed attitude to the classical music world and a former BBC New Generation Artist.

He will bring his fresh approach to Walton’s famous work which was composed in Italy and is drenched in Mediterranean light.

Orchestra and Alban Gerhardt will be joined by conductor David Atherton who is well known for being a fine interpreter of music and having a clear vision of how he wants a piece of music to sound. A skill he will be able to put to full force in the performance of Holst’s The Planets depicting the awe and mystery of the night sky, ranging from the menace of Mars, the serene sweetness of Venus through to the joyous vigour of Jupiter. Ladies of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales will join the Orchestra adding their powerful sound to the piece.

The concert will be recorded live for BBC Radio 3 and forms part of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera and St David’s Hall’s CelloFest, a celebration of the Cello which has been part of the most deeply felt music ever composed. Works by Elgar, Walton and David Matthews will feature throughout the month and Guy Johnson and Paul Watkins will join Alban Gerhardt in January’s line up performing in the festival.
