Beddgelert village green – official opening of new look footpath

Pupils from Ysgol Beddgelert will be amongst the first to walk along a newly improved riverside footpath near the village green later this month.

The upgrade of this popular footpath along the village green is part of Gwynedd Council’s programme of improvements undertaken on the county’s footpaths. The footpath will be officially opened on Friday, 21 May with pupils from the local school along with members of the local Ti a Fi group also walking the new-look path. Members of the Dwyfor Access Group will also attend.

Nestled in the Snowdonia National Park, Beddgelert is a hugely popular destination for local residents and visitors to the area. Indeed, the thousands of visitors to the village had taken their toll on the footpath on the green in Beddgelert. However, with resurfacing work now completed, and work undertaken by Gwynedd Council’s Dwyfor Area Highways Works team to improve the drainage and gradient of the path, the path is back to its best.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, who leads on the Environment on Gwynedd Council said:

“Improvements like these at Beddgelert help to make our footpaths more accessible for members of the public so that they can keep active and enjoy our fantastic natural resources.

“Officers from Gwynedd Council’s rights of way team have worked closely with landowners, local residents and the community council to deliver this important project. We hope that local residents along with visitors to the Beddgelert area make the most of the new and improved footpath which will certainly make access for short strolls within the village boundary more enjoyable.”

Improvements to the footpath include the re-grading of the embankment, improving the drainage grid and laying a tar-macadam surface to facilitate pushchair and wheelchairs use together with minor landscaping works.

This work has been funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan Grant administered by the Countryside Council for Wales, and helps to implement the actions identified in Gwynedd’s Rights of Way Improvement Plan.

The newly improved village green riverside footpath in Beddgelert will be officially opened on Friday, 21 May. Those wishing to attend the opening should meet at the village green at 10.30am.
