Big Weekend – a huge success

Gwynedd has been centre stage this weekend thanks to the huge success of Radio 1’s Big Weekend staged at the Faenol Estate near Bangor.

Over the two days, 40,000 Big Weekenders enjoyed the sunshine on the stunning Faenol Estate on the banks of the Menai Straits with Snowdonia’s mountain range as the site’s breathtaking backdrop.

Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards said: “Events don’t come much bigger than Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and I’m delighted that Gwynedd Council’s team have been able to work closely with the BBC to ensure that this year’s event has been arguably the best ever Big Weekend.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to from young people from Gwynedd to Andy Parfitt, the controller of Radio 1 have agreed that it’s been a fantastic weekend of entertainment in a first-class location.

“All the local people who have pulled together and worked tirelessly over the past few weeks can take great credit from knowing that their efforts have well and truly paid off and will certainly help to attract further major national and international events to Gwynedd – a big thank you to them all.

“The Big Weekend has been a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase what makes Gwynedd a great place to live, work and visit – not only for the 40,000 who attended the event, but also for the millions more listening and watching at home.

“There is no doubt whatsoever that the priceless coverage our area has enjoyed over recent weeks as a result of this event will provide a real long-term boost for the local economy for the future. Crucially, we have also ensured that the Big Weekend has provided a unique opportunity for many of Gwynedd’s young people to experience the opportunities which the cultural industries and Gwynedd itself can offer.”
