Boccia catches on with kids

School teams from Fishguard and Crymych bowled them over at this year’s Boccia School tournament.

Ysgol Glannau Gwaun 1 won the final of the primary school competition while Ysgol y Preseli won the secondary school title for the second year running.

Sponsored by Chevron, the annual school boccia tournament was held at the Milford Haven Leisure Centre last week.

Five teams competed in the primary competition –  Glannau Gwaun 1, Glannau Gwaun 2, Portfield, Templeton and Monkton and eight teams competed in the secondary schools competition – Sir Thomas Picton, Portfield 1,  Porfield 2, Pembroke Bush 1,  Pembroke Bush 2, Pembroke Autistic Centre 1 , Pembroke Autistic Centre 2 and Ysgol y Preseli.

The teams competed in a round-robin competition with the two highest scoring teams meeting in the final.

Glannau Gwaun 1 took on their colleagues Glannau Gwaun 2 in the primary final, while Ysgol y Preseli beat Sir Thomas Picton in the final of the secondary school competition.

The winners and runner-ups were presented with their trophies by Angela Miles Disability Sport Development Officer for Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council.

“I was delighted to see the large number of wheelchair users taking part in the event and hope that having introduced them to the  competitive side of the sport, more players will join our County Boccia club, the Crymych Panthers,” she said.

Based on boules, boccia was originally developed for people with cerebral palsy, but is now played by people of all abilities and disabilities.
