Children across Powys are invited to join fun activities to mark National Bookstart Day 2010.
Bookstart is the national bookgifting programme that encourages all parents and carers to enjoy books with children from as early an age as possible. National Bookstart Day 2010 will be held on June 11 and the theme of this year’s event is ‘At the Seaside’ to celebrate the new summer date for the annual celebration.
Powys County Council’s Library Service are supporting the event with a range of activities suitable for pre-school children and their parents/carers. The events include:
- A beach party outside Llandrindod Wells library on June 9, 2-3pm. There will be sandpits and toys from Play Radnor (bring your bucket and spade!); fun activities with Language and Play, Wales Pre-school Providers Association, Twf and others. Groups are asked to book via the library.
- Rhymes and stories with a seaside theme at Brecon library on June 11, 10-11am
- Newtown library will host a storytime session and toy library on June 10 at 2pm
- There will also be storytime sessions on Friday June 11 at Machynlleth library (2.30pm) and Ystradgynlais library (10-11.30am)
Kay Thomas, Acting Head of Powys’ Schools & Childrens Library Service, said: “A love of books is one of the most important gifts that can be given to a child and it is never too early to start. We hope that this year’s At the Seaside theme will encourage families to enjoy sharing books and rhymes together right through the summer, indoors and out.”
