Bourne: Pro-active Prime Minister heralds new relationship with Wales

David Cameron’s first visit to Wales as Prime Minister marks the start of a new era of co-operation between Westminster and the National Assembly, Welsh Conservative Assembly leader Nick Bourne AM said today.

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s first official engagements in Wales yesterday, Mr Bourne said he was enthused by Mr Cameron’s positive, pro-active approach towards devolution and relations with the Assembly Government.

He claimed this was in stark contrast with the approach taken by the former Labour government and ex-Secretary of State.

Mr Bourne also said the new Liberal-Conservative coalition government at Westminster signalled a rejection of Old Politics.

He added:

“David Cameron’s visit to Cardiff marks the start of a constructive and positive new relationship between the UK and Welsh Assembly governments, and between Westminster and the Assembly.

“We can tackle the big challenges of the day by working together in the interests of Wales.

“Both the Westminster and Assembly governments face a daunting task getting to grips with Labour’s terrible economic legacy and its record budget deficit.

“By working together we can reverse the rising tide of unemployment which continues to affect individuals and families across Wales.

“David Cameron’s visit to Wales so soon after taking office is a clear signal that he intends to do things differently when it comes to relations between Wales and Westminster.

“I very much hope the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government will acknowledge the importance of this approach and work with the UK Government, putting Welsh interests first.”
