Boys Choir Wows the Crowd at Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod

Cor bechgyn rhos at LlangollenA local boys’ choir delivered a bravura performance at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod last week.

Côr Bechgyn Rhos (Rhos Boys’ Choir) sang traditional folk song ‘Sospan Fach’ and the Gary Barlow song ‘Let me Go’ on Wednesday 9th July, as part of the Children’s Choir of the World ceremony. The concert was only the choir’s second ever public performance.

The choir is made up of boys aged 7 – 12 and currently has 27 members. It is affiliated with Rhos Male Voice Choir and was set up by Musical Director Aled Phillips (Head of Music at Ysgol Dinas Bran Llangollen and conductor of the senior choir) in September 2013.  Their debut performance was on March 1st 2014 at the St David’s day Concert at The Stiwt Theatre alongside the senior Rhos Male Voice Choir – meaning many of the boys appeared on the same stage as their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.

Aled Phillips, speaking after the performance, said:

“This was another great performance by the boys, I’m very proud of the efforts they have put in and their hard work which is really paying off.  I’m also delighted by the response from the Eisteddfod audience, which gave us tremendous support.  We are now looking forward to future performances and to welcoming more singers to the choir.”

The choir, sponsored by local renewable energy developer West Coast Energy, is currently looking for new members from school Years 3 – 7 to join the group.  Although on its summer break at the moment, there will be a registration evening for new singers between 5.30-6.30pm on Thursday 4th September at The Stiwt Theatre, Rhos.  In the meantime you can email [email protected] or follow the choir on Facebook and Twitter (@RhosBoysChoir).

A busy autumn is already lined up for Rhos’ youngest stars: on Saturday November 15th they will appear as guests of Rhos Male Voice Choir in their annual concert at The William Aston Hall, Wrexham.
