Bridge footways temporarily closed

Footways forming the inner circle of Swansea’s River Tawe bridges are being temporarily closed as improvement works continue on site.

The inner footways on the two bridges as well as the inner footways linking them will be closed as part of the next phase of work at the bridges that will last until the end of July.

Pedestrian crossings leading to and from the inner footway are also being temporarily closed.

Signs are being put in place to keep pedestrians informed and barriers are being installed. Pedestrian routes on the outer circle will be unaffected.

A temporary crossing facility will be provided for National Cycle Network 4 cyclists who will then be able to cross East Bank Way, Fabian Way and Kings Road before travelling along the riverside route and over the Sailbridge to access National Cycle Network 43.

Improvements to the river bridges are part of the boulevard scheme between the bridges and the LC that will better connect the city centre and the seafront.

Key to the overall boulevard scheme is changing the way traffic operates at the river bridges to accommodate the projected growth in traffic over the coming decade and to help relieve congestion.

Work on the entire scheme will be finished by December and the completed scheme will see a clockwise movement of traffic introduced around the bridges, with a two-way traffic flow maintained on the southern bridge closest to Sainsbury’s.

Bridge strengthening work will be included in the project and bridge crossings will be improved for pedestrians.

A detailed traffic management plan is in place and disruption will be minimised. Two lanes of traffic will be kept open whenever possible during the overall works programme. Narrow lanes will be used when necessary and as much night-time and off-peak work as possible will be undertaken.

Residents and businesses will be regularly updated with progress.

The boulevard scheme is one of a number of projects being funded by the Welsh Government, the Wales European Funding Office and Swansea Council to improve the Swansea city centre experience for residents, businesses and visitors to the city.
