Bridgend Weather Update

School closures
Schools also have special early morning notification arrangements in place with BridgeFM – you are advised to check their website first or tune in to Bridge FM on 106.3 FM to see if your child’s school has been affected, especially before 9am.

So far it has been confirmed that the following schools will be closed:

  • Ogmore Vale Primary School

Road conditions
All main routes are currently open with the exception of the A4061 and the A4107 Bwlch mountain roads. Following discussions with Rhondda Cynon Taf and Neath Port Talbot councils, these roads will remain closed until further notice.

With heavy snow predicted,  conditions will be closely monitored.

Salt bins have been refilled and all available resources have been deployed to deal with the situation, but extreme care is required on side roads and footways.

We are also investigating reports that some salt bins have been emptied by private businesses for their own commercial use.

With central Government now prioritising which areas of the UK receive fresh deliveries of road salt and directing councils to save 25% of their salt on revised spreading routes, Bridgend County Borough Council is focusing on conserving its stock in order to keep the main highways network open.

In preparation for the cold weather, the council stockpiled 3,500 tonnes of road salt. Of this, around 400 tonnes currently remains.

This information will be updated on a daily basis to keep you informed.

Refuse collection
The remaining backlog of bin bags that the council was unable to collect last week due to the severe weather were collected on Monday 11 January 2010.

Heavy snow has been predicted for Tuesday 12 January. Conditions will be monitored and the situation will be reviewed accordingly.

Adult Community Learning classes
All enrolment for adult community learning classes is cancelled for Tuesday 12 January 2010 due to the current severe weather. Further updates will be made available here and at Bridge FM.
