A team of six police officers has been tasked with dealing specifically with burglaries in the Torfaen area.
Starting this week, two detectives and four PCs will investigate burglary crimes in the area, target known offenders and educate residents on how to prevent themselves from becoming a victim of burglary.
Usually around a third of UK-wide burglaries are committed through people leaving their properties insecure.
However, of the eight burglaries committed in Torfaen between 19th October and 3rd November, five were as a result of doors or windows being left open or unlocked – a massive 63%.
Detective Inspector Leanne Brustad, who is leading the operation, said: “The team that has been set up in Torfaen is working very hard to find additional witnesses to burglaries and to use forensic evidence to bring charges against suspected culprits.
“Householders cannot afford to be complacent or take chances with their security, even when they are inside their own homes.
“It is particularly important to keep any valuables hidden out of sight when you leave your home or when you go to bed at night, particularly in the run up to Christmas when people are buying expensive gifts.
“We would urge all householders to be vigilant in securing their homes to avoid the inconvenience and distress associated with being a burglary victim.”
Residents are reminded to keep their homes secure at all times and report anything suspicious, no matter how small, to Gwent Police.
Anyone with information that may help burglary investigations should call Gwent Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
