Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales, Eleanor Burnham has welcomed the findings of the recent All-Wales Symposium and has joined with representatives of older people’s care organisations in calling for change in the way older people are treated and perceived.
Ms Burnham, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly spokesperson for older people said:
“I sincerely hope that the results of this Symposium will lead to an improvement in the way older people are dealt with and perceived. It is unacceptable that under the current system older people’s carers are often faced with so much bureaucracy that in frustration they simply give up trying.
“There is a difference between providing support and taking control. We all need help and advice from time to time but it is vitally important that older people are allowed to maintain their independence in the process.
“As a former Home Care manager and someone whose parents lived into their nineties I know how important it is to have a positive attitude to older people.
“We must all now work together to make sure that ageism of any kind is eliminated. I shall be taking every opportunity to challenge the Welsh Government to show me what action is being taken to address the individual needs of older people as a result of these latest findings.”
