Burton’s Foods: Another blow to Welsh economy

Commenting on reports that Burton’s Foods, which produces Jammie Dodgers and other products at its factory in Cwmbran, is to cut 70 jobs, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for the Economy said:

“This is further worrying news for the Welsh economy.  Every job lost in the economy represents a family who will find it more challenging to make ends meet.

“Labour-Plaid Ministers need to take urgent action to stem the tide of declining manufacturing and production industries.

“Welsh Conservatives would introduce a clear manufacturing strategy to help businesses expand and create new jobs.”

In a joint statement, local Assembly Members William Graham AM and Mohammad Asghar AM said, “This news will come as a devastating blow to those employees affected and their families in Cwmbran and surrounding communities in South East Wales.

“We welcome the announcement of additional investment at Burton’s Foods’ factories across the UK and hope that this secures the long term future of its Cwmbran base.

“Ministers need to provide reassurances that the highly-skilled workers affected will be given all the support they need to find new employment.”
