Bute Park Named Wales’ 3rd Green Heritage Site

Cardiff Logo smallBute Park has been named as a Green Heritage Site.  The city centre park is only the third site in Wales to be awarded this accolade.  The award has been marked with the raising of a Green Heritage Flag over the magnificent 56 hectare park.

Green Heritage Site Accreditation is awarded to parks and green spaces in recognition of achieving the required standard in the management and interpretation of a site with local or national historic importance.

The award comes as eight other sites across Cardiff were awarded Green Flag status.  Grange Gardens, Parc Cefn Onn, Roath Park, Rumney Hill Gardens, Victoria Park, Cathays Cemetery, Thornhill Cemetery and Crematorium and the Barrage have all been recognised as being amongst the best parks and green spaces in the United Kingdom.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, said:  “To be one of only three sites in Wales with Green Heritage accreditation is a fantastic achievement.  Cardiff is blessed with some wonderful green spaces, they’re part of what makes this such a liveable city, and I want to pay tribute to the work that is done by parks staff and also by our partners in Friends Groups across the city, who devote so much of their time and energy to making our parks worthy of Green Flag status.”
