Cadw bringing history to life this Bank Holiday weekend

There’s still enough time to enjoy the rest of August and make the most of the school holidays so why not enjoy a day out and visit some of Cadw’s historic sites this Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 28, Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August.

Wales’ most famous castles, palaces and abbeys provide dramatic backdrops to plays and pageants, battles and military displays ensuring an action-packed weekend making history come alive!

Experience expert weaponry skills by Early Medieval Warriors and witness demonstrations of the noble art of hunting with falcons and other birds of prey presented by the Ardudwy Knights at Criccieth Castle on Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 August, 11am-4pm.

Also enjoy Knights, Fights and Other Delights with medieval entertainment by the Harlech Medieval Society at Harlech Castle on Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm.

Visitors to Denbigh Castle this Bank Holiday weekend will have the opportunity to step back in time to 1294 and watch Madoc ap Llywelyn’s Welsh revolt on Sunday 29 August and Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm. Join the Knights of Longshanks as they re-enact the siege in an extraordinary day of battle and medieval warfare. As the soldiers in the garrison camp train and hone their skill at arms, decide where your loyalties lie. Do you stand for the King, or do you march with the rebels? See the families and the people of the garrison camp as they go about their daily survival – cooking, weaving and demonstrating the essential crafts of the time.

Step back in time with the crafts and soldiers of Gwent as the medieval re-enactment group Freemen of Gwent entertain and show off their camp at Beaumaris Castle on Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm. The group portrays a self contained band of mercenary fighters on campaign and the whole encampment will be set up to re-create the life of people in the medieval age encompassing interesting living history and craft displays with informative and educational commentary.

At the newly opened Tretower Court the Renaissance Footnotes will perform music and dance of the Tudor and Stuart times on Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm. Visitors are invited to join in the entertainment and learn the dances of that period whilst observing how societies were portrayed. There will be a whole lot of fun, music and dancing for everyone!

Laugharne Castle
will be the scene for the Companions of the Forest, who will be portraying life and times in the medieval and English Civil War years on Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm. Watch out for the gunpowder and archery!

Oxwich Castle will be brought to life as the Marcher Stuarts recreate C17th life and bring colourful characters, crafts and cookery, soldiers and sword to the castle on Sunday 29 & Monday 30 August (11am-4pm).

Caerphilly Castle will be under siege and chance to witness the firing of the mighty siege engines with the Company of Chivalry on Sunday 29 August, 11am-4pm.

Tales from Aesops Fables as told by the Spellbinder will take place at Castell Coch on Sunday 29 August, 11am-4pm.  With paintings of Aesop’s fables adorning the walls of the spectacular octagonal drawing room, step back in time and enjoy these enchanting tales in wonderful surroundings.

Come and meet Cadw’s own Knight, the gallant Sir Andrew at Castell Coch who will be holding court and teaching apprentice knights about training and handling a sword on Monday 30 August, 11am-4pm.
