Caernarfon PCSO secures customer care award

A Caernarfon-based Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) has received an award for his outstanding work in the community.

PCSO Norman Hughes, who is based within the Community Safety Department at Caernarfon Police Station, has received the Dyna Dda ‘Quality of Service and Customer Satisfaction Award,’ which is awarded to officers who go that extra mile.

The award is given as part of a scheme operated in the force’s Western Division whereby a reward is given to a member of staff who has provided outstanding quality of service and customer satisfaction.

PCSO Hughes has been awarded for the work he has undertaken over an extensive period of time with various diverse groups within the local community.

One aspect of his work has involved close liaison with the Gypsy / Traveller community. He has produced a power point presentation of Gypsy customs – a guide for all officers and staff within the Western Division and has assisted in establishing a referral process between North Wales Police and the local authorities during occurrences of unauthorised encampments.

He is a member of the Divisional Confidence and Equality Group whose primary function is to develop initiatives to promote diversity and raise awareness of diversity and equality across Anglesey and Gwynedd.

He also regularly attends disability meetings on a local and Force basis and has implemented several action plans following feedback received from both individuals and groups within the disabled community.

PCSO Hughes has recently become involved with partner agencies by supporting victims of hate crime. He has helped to set up a pilot scheme within schools, assessing the needs of schoolchildren and providing a method for victims to report any incidents of hate crime anonymously.

Western Community Safety Inspector Guy Blackwell said: “PCSO Hughes always exhibits a high level of motivation and commitment to his duties and I congratulate him for his continued efforts.”

Greg George, Head of Diversity for North Wales Police said: “I have worked with Norman over the past year and he has shown fantastic commitment to ensuring good communications are established and maintained with the different diverse groups in Gwynedd and Anglesey.

“Norman provides excellent support to individuals and groups that deal with Hate crime and ensures their voice is heard.”
