Caerphilly Celebrates Award Winning Country Parks

CaerphillyFive parks across Caerphilly county borough have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award by Wales’ leading environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy.

Parc Cwm Darran, Cwmcarn Forest, Morgan Jones Park, Nelson Wern Park and Waunfawr Park have all met the exceptionally high standards expected of a Green Flag status park.

The award recognises the constantly outstanding quality offered all year by the best parks in Wales.  The judges took into account not only the cleanliness and appearance of the parks but also the fantastic range of events and activities which take place for children and families, as well as walks, trails and the nationally recognised mountain biking routes at Cwmcarn Forest.

Green Flag Community Awards were presented to St Catherine’s Church Garden and The Roger Lewis Woodland Garden. The community award celebrates achievements of voluntary groups who care for a green space within their local community, ensuring that it remains a truly special place.

Joanna Friedli, Keep Wales Tidy Green Flag Co-ordinator said:  “Keep Wales Tidy is extremely proud that so many parks and green spaces in Wales have reached the high standards necessary to achieve Green Flag status. The feedback received from our experienced volunteer judges in regards to the dedication and effort shown by staff and volunteers at these parks has been fantastic. I would like to pass on our congratulations to every single park receiving the Green Flag Award 2014/2015 and the Community Awards 2014/15 and hope that together we can continue to raise the standards of parks and green space in Wales and provide our communities with fantastic facilities to enjoy throughout the year.”

Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning & Sustainable Development said: Said: “I am thrilled that so many parks across Caerphilly county borough are being recognised for the outstanding quality experience they provide visitors with all year round.  It is brilliant to have some of the best parks in Wales and I would like to congratulate all the staff and volunteers who work so hard to maintain these fantastic green spaces for the community to enjoy.  Each park has something very special to offer, whether it be a gentle stroll, a picnic with the family, a camping trip with friends or afternoon of biking, I’m pleased that residents have access to top quality open spaces.”
