Two researchers working for Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert will be among a ten-strong team of Labour Assembly staff taking part in a Relay for Life to raise cash for a charity seeking to find a cure for cancer.
Katie O’Brien, the team’s leader and Jeff’s Researcher has been working with Alex Still, Senior Research and Policy Officer to Jeff to organise teams from within the Assembly.
Their team will be participating in the 24 hour Cancer Research UK event on 17 July at the Sue Noake Leisure Centre in Ystrad Mynach – it is the only relay of it’s kind across Wales.
Cancer survivor and Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert, encouraged support staff to put together a team and has helped them fundraise for the cause.
‘I applaud the work and effort of the organisers of the event, particularly Bridge McNally MBE. I am very proud of Alex and Katie for volunteering their spare time to help this important charity and it’s deserving cause.’
‘I am also delighted once again to assist with the opening of the relay and take my place in the Survivors lap of Honour. I hope that, as in previous years, the relay raises a considerable amount of money.’
Team leader Katie O’Brien said “Currently 1 in 3 people develop cancer during their lifetime and the effects of cancer have touched every one of their families. Statistically 3 people from our team of 10 will fall ill with cancer and I want to see that change.’
Wales’ first minister Carwyn Jones backed the groups launch at the Senedd saying; “Virtually everyone has been affected by cancer one way or another. Labour researchers work hard for AM’s and their constituents and I am proud to see this team using their spare time to raise money to support the valuable work of Cancer Research UK.”
