Caerphilly plans for new snowfall

The majority of schools in the Caerphilly county borough were able to open today thanks to the efforts of council staff who worked hard over the weekend to clear ice and snow from school sites across the area.

In addition, many doctors surgeries were also cleared to ensure members of the public attending appointments can access the sites safely.

The council also dealt with a wide variety of emergency calls where accessibility was a problem – these included dialysis, medical appointments, child birth, funerals, essential fuel deliveries and livestock feed deliveries etc.

When these priority works were completed the teams concentrated their efforts on further improving access to side streets. There were approximately 100 staff, 13 gritters and 10 JCBs undertaking these works throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Salt stocks are down to approx 200t and this is being mixed with sand to try and stretch its usage as far as possible. A delivery of 80t was received on Friday and a further delivery of 300t is anticipated for today/tomorrow although our confidence in this is not high.

Planned works for Tuesday onwards will be dependant on the level of snow encountered over this period. First priority will be given to maintaining the key strategic network and extreme emergencies.

Fortunately over the period there have been no very serious accidents and given the conditions forecast the public should be advised to take extreme caution if driving or walking on the highway network.
