Extra bin lorries in action as Caerphilly tackles backlog

Caerphilly council is working hard to clear the backlog in rubbish collections caused by recent bad weather.

Cllr. Lyn Ackerman, Caerphilly Council Borough Council Cabinet Member for the Environment and Housing said, “We know the snow has caused disruption across all services in the county borough and we understand local residents are concerned about when their rubbish and recycling will be collected. I want to reassure all our residents we are doing everything we can to clear the backlog.

“We currently have collection crews/vehicles out on all of today’s collection rounds. However, there are still issues with the safety in many side streets and rear lanes and our drivers have been instructed to assess the safety of each street on their respective rounds and to collect as much as possible safely in these circumstances.”

Cllr Ackerman continued “When our crews have completed their rounds, they will be going back out to missed collections from last week. We are also sending additional vehicles to assist with refuse collection backlogs but we still must ensure everyone’s safety.

Our Civic Amenity Sites are open but they need salt/grit to ensure we can treat areas that have been cleared of snow to prevent further icy conditions and as everyone knows salt stock is at a critical low level and these sites cannot be considered a priority.”

In general terms the cleansing service is also collecting hygiene waste where they can access properties, together with emptying public litter bins and collecting commercial waste from town centres. We are not booking any bulk collections until the weather conditions improve.

This situation is, of course, subject to change dependent on weather conditions and we hope the public will understand the difficulties we are facing.
