Call to introduce carers’ right to respite

Welsh Conservatives today called on the Welsh Labour Government to consider introducing a right to respite for carers as Ministers consider their response to a consultation on the future of respite care.

Speaking at the start of Carers’ Week, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Health, said, “All too often carers are the unrecognised heroes of Welsh society.

“Caring for an unwell or elderly friend or relative can be both mentally and physically exhausting and places a heavy burden on relationships.

“Even a brief period of respite care can be a major source of support and rejuvenation to carers.

“In the recent election Welsh Conservatives campaigned for a right to respite for carers to give them a break from the work of looking after loved ones.

“As we recognise the dedication and tireless contribution of carers as part of Carers’ Week, it would be timely for Ministers to consider proposals to improve access to respite.

“I would urge members of all parties to engage in a constructive debate about how we can improve access to respite for many carers across Wales who need a break to allow them to continue their dedicated work.

“I hope Ministers will give serious consideration to introducing a right to respite for carers in the near future.”
