Calling all Performance Poets

The John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry is back for 2009 and Academi is once again searching for the best performance poet in Wales. Do you have what it takes to impress our judges and walk away with the First Prize of £500?

Heats are taking place throughout Wales this October starting on National Poetry Day (Thursday 8 October), at Llanhilleth Miners Institute in Gwent. Further heats will take place on Tuesday 13 October at Pontardawe Arts Centre; Wednesday 21 October at The Gate in Cardiff and on Tuesday 27 October at Venue Cymru in Llandudno. The heats will culminate in a Grand Final in Cardiff, John Tripp’s hometown, on Thursday 19 November. Full details of all heats can be found on the Academi website: www.academi.org/johntripp/

Academi has been holding events in tribute to John Tripp, one of Wales’ most prolific poetry performers, since 1990. Once again, this year’s competition is open to all, beginners and established poets alike. So, with only five minutes to impress the judges, now is the time to take centre stage and make your voice heard.

Whether you prefer to come along and listen or battle it out yourself, each event is guaranteed to be a night of entertaining and exciting new work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Tickets for the heats cost just £3.00 / £2.00 and tickets for the Grand Final cost £5.00 / £4.00 (concessions for Academi Members and Associates).
