A new scheme designed to assist people walking the Ceredigion Coast Path is being launched at the 2010 Outdoor Show – held at the NEC Birmingham, 26- 28 March 2010.
The Cab-a-Bag initiative provides a service offering walkers following the Ceredigion Coast Path the choice of having their luggage forwarded to their next overnight accommodation. The service is a collaborative enterprise on behalf of nearly 20 Ceredigion taxi firms and a host of accommodation bases graded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Visit Wales service and accredited as offering a welcome to walkers.
Up until now, most walkers following the 62 mile, (98 km) Ceredigion Coast Path have had little option other than to carry their bags with them along the route. The new Cab-a-Bag initiative provides an option for ensuring walkers’ luggage travels safely to their next destination ahead of their arrival.
Ceredigion County Council’s Rural Tourism Development Officer, Peter Austin explained: “Using the Cab-a-Bag scheme, people can actually walk the Ceredigion Coast Path from Cardigan to Ynyslas without having to carry their rucksacks with them. They can travel light and enjoy the walking experience. Some walkers may plan to arrive by public transport and can use the Cab-a-Bag facility to pre-book a transfer from their arrival point to their first accommodation provider and, from then on, use the service to pass luggage ahead. We know of no other similar scheme that has involved so broad a cluster of businesses coming together to offer a service that clearly complements the significant investment made in the creation of a path such as the Ceredigion Coast Path. It is really encouraging to see local businesses come together in such a constructive fashion to add value to what is already fast becoming one of the most popular coastal walks in Britain.”
The Ceredigion Cab-a-Bag initiative has a distinctive yellow logo that can be easily recognized and luggage will bear bespoke travel tags to ensure it is identifiable.
The Ceredigion Cab-a-Bag project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The project has been coordinated by Ceredigion County Council’s Communications & Tourism Service.
