Cardiff and Vale College is busy helping to create the workforce for the Capital Region’s Financial and Professional Services Enterprise Zone, offering a suite of courses for people looking for a career in finance.
CAVC now offers the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) Level 3 Diploma in Finance, Risk and Investment. The one–year course is equivalent to an A Level or two AS Levels and provides a professional qualification that can fast track people into a career in the financial and professional services.
Anyone who completes the course, taught by an industry expert with 25 years of experience, will find themselves as a preferred candidate at a range of financial institutions.
“The Level 3 Diploma in Finance, Risk and Investment gives people a real broad range of knowledge around financial services,” CAVC Financial Services Tutor Dave Phillips said. “It looks at financial markets and institutions, gives a grounding in data analysis and the different types of investments.
“The course is aimed at anyone who is looking for a career in financial services; banks, building societies, insurance, wealth management, government bodies that deal with finance and funding. This is an industry-related qualification for an area which is experiencing massive growth at the moment.”
Financial institutions across the region cite staff and skills shortages, welcoming a new qualification that will create the workforce for the enterprise zone. Legal and General People Development Manager Sandie Dunn said:
“Finding enough high calibre, capable staff to fill skilled roles remains, by far, one of the biggest challenges as the financial services industry continues to grow. The CISI Diploma in Finance, Risk and Investment programme offered by Cardiff and Vale College will help employers to overcome this challenge.
“The modules offered will be invaluable in preparing learners for employment, teaching them how to apply theory in the workplace and developing the skills required for working in a professional environment. Students who undertake the Diploma in Finance, Risk and Investment through Cardiff and Vale College have the potential of making an immediate contribution to the effectiveness of the organisation they work for, making this a very attractive proposition for students and prospective employers.”
She added: “Legal and General would seriously consider any job application from someone with this qualification, and they would immediately become a preferred applicant with a real advantage over other applicants with less relevant qualifications.”
Meanwhile, a group of CAVC students are celebrating successfully completing their CISI Level 2 Fundamentals of Financial Services qualification. Studied alongside their Level 3 BTEC Business course, the CISI modules covers a variety of topics relating to the finance industry, such as ethics, saving and banking, stock markets, bonds and foreign exchange.
One of the students, 19-year-old Macauley Williams from Cardiff, said: “I’ve really enjoyed doing this course alongside my BTEC. It will really help me with my planned future working in the finance industry.”
