Wales’ most colourful Carnival will celebrate 25 sparkling years as it explodes onto the streets of Cardiff city centre in a riot of sequins, glitter and feathers.
Cardiff Carnival 2014 on Saturday, August 9, starts in The Hayes at 10.30 a.m. with a carnival stage featuring glamorous costumes, hi-energy dance, samba drumming, quirky street theatre, Brazilian martial arts, live music, family friendly burlesque, magic shows and surprise flashmobs.
Leaving at 3.30 p.m. the carnival parade will dance its way from the Atrium on Adam Street, along Churchill Way and Queen Street before turning into High Street, continuing along Mill Lane, the Hayes and back towards the Atrium via Hill Street and Barrack Lane.
Artistic Director, Steve Fletcher, said: “Started in 1990, Cardiff Carnival 2014 will celebrate its 25th anniversary – organisers SWICA Carnival guarantee the biggest and brightest carnival parade in Wales to mark a quarter of a century of collective community creation and the joyous transformation of the capital’s streets.”
Cllr Peter Bradbury, Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, said: “Cardiff Carnival gets bigger and better every year and with twenty-five years to celebrate I’m sure this year’s parade will be the most flamboyant the city has seen yet.”
Cardiff Carnival takes place at the height of the Cardiff Festival with events including the Classic Car and Boat Rally (August 10), Grand Medieval Mêlée (August 16-17), Pride Cymru (August 16), Cardiff Harbour Festival (August 22 – 25) and White Water Fest (September 6) all still to come in what is shaping up to be a sizzling summer of entertainment.
