Cardiff Council & South Wales Police comment Thirst Class award winners 2010

Cardiff Council and South Wales Police have presented Thirst Class Awards to premises which have been recognised for consistent high standards of safety and security in Cardiff’s licensed late night drinking venues.

The awards have been given to well run bars and clubs that can demonstrate a responsible attitude to managing their late night premises within the city centre.

Throughout the year city centre premises are monitored for alcohol related crime and disorder incidents. Points are deducted for alcohol related incidents that occur in the premises.

The awards are the final result of finding worthy winners who have shown consistency during the twelve month period of monitoring.  It is also hoped the scheme will encourage other premises to strive for an award and reach the necessary high standards involved throughout the year.

The Thirst Class Awards commend the best run small, medium and large premises.
This year’s awards have been presented to:

Old Arcade, 14 Church St – Winner Small Premises Henry’s Café Bar, Park Place  – Winner Medium Premises Platinum/Pure 114-116 St Mary Street – Winner Large Premises

Councillor Ed Bridges, Chairman of Cardiff’s Licensing Committee said:  “The Thirst Class Awards are an excellent initiative aimed at improving the safety of staff and members of the public in city centre venues. The scheme has recognised and rewarded good management of licensed premises in Cardiff City Centre.  Congratulations to all the award winners.”

Licensing Sergeant Trevor Jones, based at Cardiff Bay Police Station, said: “The awards are launched as new figures reveal that in the last 12 months, there has been a reduction in assaults and 345 less alcohol related crime and disorder incidents in Cardiff’s licensed premises.  For some time, we have been monitoring problematic premises and working with the licensees to address the issues. Now it is time for us to reward the management of the best of the well run licensed premises for their hard work.”
