Holocaust Memorial Day will take place on Thursday, January 26, with the Wales National Service to mark the day taking place at Cardiff City Hall at 1pm.
Holocaust Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. The day honours the survivors and remembers those who have lost their lives. It also provides an opportunity for society to reflect on the way in which we live our lives today.
Each year Holocaust Memorial Day has a UK wide theme and this year’s theme is Speak Up, Speak Out to create a safer, better future. The theme asks people to think about the rights, responsibility and duty we all have to speak up when we see or hear something which we believe to be wrong.
In attendance at the service will be The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Delme Bowen, Cardiff Council Leader, Cllr Rodney Berman and First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones.
Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Delme Bowen, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a very poignant day, remembering those who lost their lives simply because of their race and their religion. It’s important that we continue to learn from the mistakes made from the past and teach future generations about this terrible time in history. “
First Minster of Wales, Carwyn Jones said: “As the years pass, the survivors of the Holocaust become fewer and fewer, making it increasingly important to remember the atrocities that unchecked hatred and intolerance can lead to.
“From learning from the past we can be reminded to continue to be vigilant so that the horror of genocide cannot be repeated.
“I am proud to reaffirm Wales’ commitment to the ongoing remembrance of those who died as a result of the Holocaust and other genocides, to honouring survivors and to fighting intolerance in all its forms.”
