Carvers do Garden a good turn

Woodworkers are carving out a niche for themselves at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

From Saturday (July 16), members of the British Wood-Carving Association will be holding a week-long exhibition at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Local woodturner Les Bryan, who has helped organise the event said: “The exhibition will feature a whole range of demonstrations as well as displays of what the woodcarvers have made. They will be showing off their skills at all aspects of wood-carving, from figurines to rocking horses to  lovespoons.”

During the week, Les will be ‘turning’ a chair from start to finish and other participants will be working on a plaque they are donating to the Garden in honour of the successful ‘Barcode project’ currently being completed by the Conservation and Research team at the Carmarthenshire attraction.

There are 12 different sections to the plaque and there will be a different carver working on each separate section.

Chairman of the British Wood-Carving Association, south Wales Branch, Derek Edwards said: “We woodcarvers are very interesting folk to talk to because we are so enthusiastic about the work they do. And we are always happy to share our secrets with visitors.”

The exhibition takes place in the Great Glasshouse from Saturday July 16 until Sunday July 24. Normal Garden admission applies, there is no further charge to visit the exhibition.
