Cathays Cemetery joins Tree O’Clock to plant a world record

tree oclock2To help celebrate National Tree Week, Cardiff Council’s Bereavement Services teamed up with BBC Breathing Places and Guinness World Records for ‘Tree O’Clock’ – a nationwide challenge to plant as many trees as possible within a single hour.

On Saturday 5th December staff from Bereavement Services and the Friends of Cathays Cemetery Group joined in with the rest of the UK to do ‘one thing’ for nature by simply planting a tree. Eighteen volunteers joined Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture to plant 30 Rowan trees at Cathays Cemetery.

The aim of the challenge was to attempt to unite the nation in a mass tree planting and provide a lasting legacy for communities across the UK for many years to come. The trees planted at Cathays Cemetery will contribute to the World Record attempt for trees planted by hand by any number of people within a single hour.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said:  “We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a new World Record. But, whatever the outcome, I’m delighted that we planted a significant number of new trees. This will leave a lasting legacy for local residents and visitors to Cathays Cemetery.”

Evidence of trees planted must be submitted by noon on Friday 11th December. Guinness World Records will inspect the records and it is hoped that an announcement on the record attempt will be made later that day.
