Red deer and dolphin skulls, fossils of all kind, wasp and birds nests – you can have a close look at them all on the Countryside Council for Wales’ stand in the Royal Welsh Show.
The stand is part of CCW’s support for the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, declared by the United Nations.
We share our planet with around 13 million other species. The huge variety of plants and animals around the world provide us with the food we eat, fuel to keep warm, medicine – even the air we breathe; essentials we can’t live without.
Environment Minister Jane Davidson will be speaking about the importance of biodiversity on CCW ‘ s stand, on Tuesday 10.00am. She will be joined by environment organisations who will outline their work to help biodiversity in Wales.
Ms Davidson said: “Just as we are coming to better understand the services provided to us from the environment, we are, globally, losing biodiversity at an unprecedented rate.
“There is a real danger in taking biodiversity for granted because this natural life support system could not be replaced were it to fail. Biodiversity’s contribution to our lives is not just a practical one. The outdoors is good for the soul and essential for our mental well being.
“But there is room for optimism. The Welsh Assembly Government is working with CCW and many others to ensure that the environment is central to all our decisions. We need, in particular, to make sure that our policies that impact on land and sea fully consider the wellbeing of people and ensure that we use resources in ways which protect our essential natural assets.”
