Celebrate Olympics Launch at Eirias Park

Conwy County Borough Council has announced a major event on 27 July to help celebrate the launch the London Olympics.

Hot on the heels of news of Olly Murs and Pixie Lott playing Access All Eirias on 28 July at Eirias Stadium, Conwy County Borough Council has announced a major event at the same venue on 27 July to help launch the London Olympics

Olympic Celebration Day celebrates Parc Eirias’ designation as an official community live site for the Olympic Games, with a special concert that gives free admission, featuring the best in Welsh entertainment, including headline act Only Men Aloud, the Classical Brit Award-winning choir who triumphed in BBC’s Last Choir Standing, and who now sell out concert venues across the country. They are supported by legendary Welsh Rock figure Mike Peters of The Alarm and Big Country; the lovely Sophie Evans, currently starring at the London Palladium as Dorothy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Wizard of Oz, after being spotted on BBC’s Over The Rainbow; Côr Glanaethwy, the North Wales choir who came runner-up to Only Men Aloud in Last Choir Standing; and classically trained Mezzo-Soprano Sioned Terry.

The stadium will be dressed in official Olympic branding, and the Opening Ceremony will be shown on a giant screen in the stadium as well. There is also a whole variety of family entertainment to be had throughout the Olympic-themed day, with fun, sporting and cultural activities hosted by Conwy County Borough Council taking place throughout the park. These include aqua-fun sessions in the pool, a skate jam, professional displays including a world record attempt by 3Sixty Bike Stunt Team, a fairground featuring the Wheel of Death, a zip line, dance and Zumba sessions on the big stage and much, much more.

Iwan Davies, Chief Executive, Conwy County Borough Council said: “27 and 28 July 2012 is going to be a special weekend.  The development of Parc Eirias and attracting major events to the County is at the heart of our regeneration plans and we are very proud that Parc Eirias will be hosting not one but two prestigious concerts within hours of each other, and that Parc Eirias will be hosting the only official Olympic Live Site within North Wales.”

Pablo Janczur, Director of Orchard, who are promoting the event, said: “With excitement mounting for Olly Murs and Pixie Lott on the Saturday, we’re now going to make this a whole fantastic weekend of entertainment, with a great day full of Olympic-themed activities building up to a free evening concert that showcases the best of Welsh talent. Forget London for the Olympics, Parc Eirias is where it’s at!”

Bay of Colwyn Town Council and Cartrefi Conwy are also partners in the Friday event which is free of charge, however a ticket will be required for entry and they are available in advance only (maximum six tickets per person and no tickets available on the day) from the following outlets from 9am Friday 30th March.

Amongst the talent on show at the Olympic Celebration Concert will be the winners and runners-up of The Next Big Thing, a talent search from across North Wales which is being launched to coincide with the event. The competition is open to bands, singer songwriters and musical acts and the only requirement is that they play original music (see www.accessalleirias.com for details on entries).  In addition to playing the big stage at the event, the winners will also receive £500.

There will be three heats and the final will be held in Venue Cymru.

  • Theatr Colwyn on 16 June
  • Galeri Caernarfon on 23 June
  • Wrexham Central Station on 28 June
  • Venue Cymru (final) on 14 July 2012.

Activities start at Eirias Park at 10.30am on Friday 27 July 2012, with gates opening to the free ticketed concert in Eirias Stadium at 4pm.
