Changes to Cynon Valley Bus Service

Bus operators are about to make major changes to a series of bus routes currently servicing the areas of the Cynon Valley.

Passengers are being advised that between Sunday 7th and Saturday 13th August some of their regular Sunday and weekday evening services could be affected by the changes.

Glamorgan Bus will be withdrawing Sunday and weekday evening journeys resulting in changes to the following services:

No. 89 – Sunday Service Aberdare to Merthyr Tydfil

This service, which serves Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr, will now be operated by Local Link under a subsidised contract to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

In addition, following public demand, Local Link has extended the route with the introduction of through journeys on Sundays to/from Cardiff, via Pontypridd as part of the 600 AberdareCardiff service. There will also be a change to the timetable on the 600 service with an earlier arrival (before midday) in Cardiff on Sundays allowing shoppers to make the most of weekend shopping.

No. 60A – Monday to Saturday evening journeys between Aberdare and Pontypridd will now be operated by Stagecoach under a subsidised contract to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. Connections and through ticketing are available at Pontypridd with the Stagecoach X4 service to/from Cardiff. In addition, following public request, there will also be a through service run every hour throughout the day from Aberdare to Cardiff via Pontypridd.

Other changes being introduced by Glamorgan Bus include the reinstatement of a Monday to Saturday daytime service between Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil via Mountain Ash and Abercynon (no. 94) which will replace the operator’s X96 service between Aberdare and Pontypridd which is being withdrawn.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s role in public transport is to consider any gaps in the bus network that may arise and intervene where routes are considered socially necessary. The Council works with various bus companies to deliver such services within the constraints of available funding.
